Love in the Air We are touched by a Piece of Mask and a Bottle of Hand Sanitizer
Every Hong Kong people feels panic under the outbreak of COVID-19, Our residential homes for the aged blind faced the shortage of face masks and other hygiene products as well. HKSB operates seven 24-hour residential homes, serving around 600 residents by 340 front-line staff, we used around 2,000 face masks per day. It was a big challenge and pressure to us when we are not able to purchase face masks and hygiene products. Our worries were spread out to the public and hence received many donations included face masks, hand sanitizer, bleach and etc from different organizations, companies and individuals immediately. We deeply appreciated all the donors for their kindness and considerations.
Apart from the pressure to the residential homes, the visually impaired persons living in community feel vulnerable. Some visually impaired worn a face mask for a few days and avoid to go out because they do not want to waste a face mask. Guide dog users Gean said, “I did not go out with my guide dog recently, I am afraid she will lay down on the floor and carry some virus to our home and infect my little son. Moreover, even I missed my parents so much since we are not living together, I avoid to visit them at the moment.” Ivan, another visually impaired person said, “It is impossible for us to buy a box of face mask via internet or queue up overnight. Recently, the toilet paper is out of stock, my friend informed me there is stock in one of the shop, I rushed to there and waited in the queue, but I don’t know when the queue is moving, and no one reminded me to walk, I stood there and felt embarrassing. Luckily, I got some face masks and hand sanitizer via HKSB, thank you for the donation from the public.”
The face masks and different kinds of hygiene products donated from all around the society, we have distributed to our residential homes for the aged blind, low vision and eye care centre and other service units, we have also given out around 800 sets of anti-epidemic pack to the visually impaired persons living in the community.
Once again, we would like to thank you most sincerely for all the concern and support to our services for the visually impaired.
