The Meaning of Eye Care Services

“I can see your smiling face clearly now!” – The meaning of a pair of new glasses to a handicapped child

Heartfelt thanks to L'OCCITANE Foundation for supporting HKSB to provide eye care services and free spectacles to children from the low income families in the past few years.

Fong (pseudonym) was suffering from congenital brain problem and was diagnosed with both visual and intellectual disabilities. She had not received regular vision assessment in hospital for two years under the COVID-19 epidemic. The spectacle lenses were scratched and size of the frame was no longer fit her head size.  After a detailed eye examination at the General Eye Care and Low Vision Centre of HKSB high refractive power and strabismus were revealed in both eyes and change of new spectacles was highly recommended by the optometrist. The L'OCCITANE Foundation fully supported her to prescribe a new spectacles at HKSB. She was so excited when she got the new spectacles and said “Can you see my smiling face? I can now see your smiling face clearly” The new spectacles not only helped her in vision but also enhanced her confidence in daily activities.

Multiple handicapped children usually have a high incidence of nearly all types of disorders affecting the visual system; assessment and management of these children are usually a complex challenge to the clinician because of the limitations in mobility and communication of the children. HKSB optometrists have plenty experiences in handling multiple handicapped, we use special designed equipment and techniques to provide comprehensive eye examination to the multiple handicapped children, we believe that our passion will make patient’s vision overcomes physical disability.

Enhancement of eye care service quality by adopting advanced equipment

In order to improve our service standard, HKSB equipped eight new ophthalmic equipment by the support from a Charitable Foundation in late 2020. These include an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) System, Optical Biometry device and Ultrasound Biometry device.

HKSB is now equipped with the latest model of OCT which provides assessment of deeper layers of retina when compared with the commonly used model in the market. It scans the retina by 100,000 cycles per second and so makes assessment completed within few seconds. In addition, the new models of the Optical Biometry device and the Ultrasound Biometry device are incorporated with the most updated formulae used in IOL power calculation. Postoperative refractive error and visual acuity can be predicted more precisely with these two new devices.
