HKSB fully supports the PolyU research team in developing 'AI-Care'

Currently, visually impaired in Hong Kong can travel safely with the aid of white canes and guide dogs, but daily activities such as shopping and taking public transport remain highly challenging. Led by Prof. Li Jing, Associate Professor of the Department of Computing and Associate Director of the Research Institute for Generative AI at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), and co-developed with industry partner Hillming Smartech Limited, the innovative assistive system "AI-Care" has been created. Centred around advanced artificial intelligence models, the system combines smart glasses and a mobile application to actively detect surrounding environments and provide real-time voice guidance, empowering visually impaired to independently manage their daily life requirements. HKSB fully supports the launch of community trials, aiming to inject new momentum into building a more inclusive smart city in Hong Kong.
The "AI-Care" project press conference was held on the PolyU campus on June 10, 2026. Mr. Sean Fong, Chief Executive of HKSB, stated at the launch: "AI-Care can help visually impaired break through physical limitations, achieve a more autonomous lifestyle, and boost their confidence in integrating into society. Many service users of HKSB have already benefited from such innovations, and we look forward to further introducing this cutting-edge system and integrating it into our services." Supported by a total of HK$5 million from the HKSAR Government's Innovation and Technology Fund and the industry, the project has completed its core AI model design and cloud server stability verification. The team is currently optimizing memory management, hardware configuration, and prototype design, with the goal of advancing technology commercialization and wider adoption in the future.
