Residential Care and Day Activity Training for the Visually Impaired with Mental Handicap

Introduction

The Hong Kong Society for the Blind has been committed to provide quality service for people with visually impaired. Under the service mission of diversified services to meet the varied needs, the Morning Glory DAC cum Hostel and the Bradbury Home are established under the Residential Services Division to provide residential care and training to the mental handicapped blind according to their abilities.

1. Morning Glory DAC cum Hostel

Target Group

1. Visually Impaired with Mental Handicap
2. Aged 15 or above
3  In need of rehabilitation and residential care
4. Free from active infectious diseases and suitable for group living 

Objectivesphoto

1. To enable service recipients to acquire self-care skills, social skill and simple work skills.
2. To provide appropriate training, quality nursing and residential care to meet their individual needs in order to promote their independence.
3. To prepare them for transition to other forms of service according to their changing service needs.
4. To establish community networking for promotion of social integration of the visually impaired with mental handicap
5. To provide a decent living environment for our service users

Multi-Intelligence Training

Various multi-intelligence group training to develop the potentials of our clients in music, artwork, language and spatial senses are available.

Multi Sensory Therapy

Multi-sensory therapy is adopted for clients with emotional behaviour and those with low functioning skills in self-care and interpersonal communication.

Integrated Sensory Motor Development and Rehabilitation Programme

- Physical Fitness Class
- Spinal Exercise Class

Deaf-Blind Training Programmephoto

Specialized individual or group training to persons with deafblindness is available through the use of Calender Box, Pocket Talker and Tactual Sign Language to develop their self-care skills in daily living and communication with the surroundings for enhancement of their quality of life.

Family Care and Support Service

Individual counseling service to trainees and their family members for family care and support.

Volunteers Training and Development

Volunteers are recruited and trained to assist in running of social and recreational programmes for our service recipients, provision of escort service for residents in attending medical follow-up or outdoor activities.

2. Bradbury Homephoto

Target Group

- Visually Impaired with Mental Handicap
- Aged 15 or above
- In need of independent living skills training and residential care
- Free from active infectious diseases and suitable for group living

Objectives

1. To develop the independent living skills of the residents through the provision of semi-independent and supportive residential care.
2. To organize recreational activities and mutual support groups to broaden residents social network and build up their confidence in community participation and increase public understanding of the mentally handicapped blind.

Personal Development Progoramme

Interest groups are organized for the residents to develop their personal hobbies and talents in order to make their leisure and life more meaningful and enjoyable.

Psychosocial Care and Group work service

Various social groups including mutual support groups are organized for residents

Health Care and Education

Health talks on prevention of infectious disease and maintenance of personal hygiene, healthy diet and close monitoring of the physical health of the residents are organized.

Community Networking for promotion of Social Integration

Encourage trainees to participate actively in community programmes and activities for promotion of social integration

Volunteers Services Development

- volunteers recruitment and training
- promotion of friendship building between our service users and volunteers to widen the social network of our service users for better social integration.

Application Procedures

Applications can be made through family service centres of the Social Welfare Department, medical social services, special schools and other welfare agencies.

Discharge Procedures

Service users are free to apply for discharge. If service users are no longer meeting the admission criteria or their behaviour puts other service users at risk, after intervention by social worker which turns out in vain, they will be asked to leave the service. Alternative placement will be arranged whenever necessary.

According to the fees standard set by the Social Welfare Department for subvented hostels.
