Introduction
IIn the 1960s, the braille production services
were mainly provided by the Education Department and our
Society. Upon the recommendation of the Working Party on
Braille Production, all brailling services were centralised to be done
by one agency and the Society has been appointed by Government as the
operating agency to produce all types of braille reading materials for
the blind in Hong Kong since 1986. As such, the Centralised
Braille Production Centre has been set up and is subvented by the
Education Department since then. It officially commenced
operation as of 1 October 1986 with due responsibility for production
of braille reading materials for all the braille users in Hong
Kong. After years of development, the Centre has adopted the
double-sided embossing technique instead of the single-sided; and
putting the braille news excerpts, braille monthly digest, etc, on the
internet so as to provide the visually impaired in Hong Kong with
prompt information in the form of electronic publishing.
